In 2013, following the release of Hayao Miyazaki's 11th feature-length film as director, The Wind Rises, the artist behind some of animation's most indelible creations announced his retirement. That film, a loose biopic about the life of aeronautics engineer Jiro Horikoshi -- imbued with the fantastical imagery that Miyazaki is best known for -- is about life, the pursuit of happiness in a world that tries its damndest to snuff it out, and the hardships of being an artist in a world with very different designs.
